Buying Online vs. Choosing an Accredited Air-Conditioning Company: Making the Right Choice

What to Know Before Buying a New Air Conditioner

Buying a new air conditioning system is a big decision, not just because it’s expensive, but because it determines whether you and your family are comfortable at home during either the Summer or Winter months. Everyone expects smooth and efficient air conditioning when they buy a new unit, but unfortunately, that’s not always the case.

Improper installation of new HVAC systems by non-accredited installers is a common issue, resulting in reduced efficiency and shortened lifespans of air conditioning units. This not only leads to comfort problems, including high humidity, airborne pollutants, and poor air quality but also creates warranty complications with the company you purchased it from. Despite the unit being under warranty, the absence of sign-off by a licensed HVAC contractor may void the warranty, potentially leading to additional expenses for the customer.  Costing you more money at the end of the day.

That is why it is important to do your homework before buying and installing your new air conditioner or pool/geyser heat pump.

Most customers face the choice between buying from an all-inclusive dealer or purchasing a unit online.

The all-inclusive dealers are where the contractor provides both the unit and the installation and the other is buying the unit online from one company and hiring a contractor for the installation. The problem with buying online is that you will still need to find a contractor to install your newly bought aircon.

This can bring on problems as the industry is difficult to regulate and the insurance of a proper and complete installation is unknown. If you have your unit installed by a non-accredited installer, and the unit requires repairs or a replacement, you might not be able to claim for the warranty.

Many people don’t know that an air-conditioning unit is an appliance that requires gas to operate and by law, you need a Pressure Equipment Regulation, certified SAQCC Gas technician, to install a unit.

It also states in writing with most reputable air conditioning brands, that they require an accredited dealer installs the unit, or else the manufacturer’s warranty becomes void.

This is the reason many contractors will only install HVAC units they have supplied themselves because manufacturer warranties go through the company. They will then also make sure that there is no damage to the unit, the size of the unit is correct for the room, and that all the proper paperwork has been issued.

The most important day of an air conditioner’s life is the day of its installation.
